November 1, 2011: Love for Luzicare

Members of LuziCare student group at Colby College

Love was in the air on the night of October 20th, when Colby College held a speed dating event in a dorm lounge, hosted by Face-to-Face’s LuziCare and another student group on campus called SHOC (Student Health On Campus). LuziCare held a raffle throughout the week leading up to the event. They sold raffle tickets for an iPod Nano, a Flip Camera, and two gift certificates for popular restaurants in Waterville. At the event, people were encouraged to donate or buy a raffle ticket, and the winners were announced at the end.

The night was a huge success–there were over 120 people in attendance, bigger than it has ever been. They even ran out of table space so people were having their dates standing up! LuziCare raised approximately $500–the most amount of money they’ve raised in a single event. The attendees were very enthusiastic about meeting a possible new love interest, supporting LuziCare and SHOC, as well as having fun.

October 31, 2011: Living Art

It’s finally that time of the year again! The time of apple ciders, corn mazes, and glowing jack-o’-lanterns; when hyperspastic little Caspers and witches roam the haunted streets with remnants of artificial teeth-rotting sugary goodness still stuck on their fingers and lips. Every year around this time, I am struck with the urge to relive my good ol’ trick-or-treating days, and may have attempted to do so some year not too long ago. . . but that’s a story for another time. . .let’s just say my free bag of candy came with a side of judgmental looks (it was totally worth it).

Volunteer’s Blog: Helpless to Help

One of my favorite things about working with SCC is the various opportunities it has provided for me to reach out to the local community. On top of hosting basic education classes and vocational training, SCC also provides assistance to impoverished HIV patients in the neighboring communes. This week I was fortunate enough to have tasted both the lows and highs of fieldwork.

As some of you may have heard, Cambodia has been experiencing some of the worst flooding in its recent history.

Volunteer’s Blog: Notes from Cambodia

Read a first-hand account of what it’s like to work with an F2F program in Cambodia.  Volunteer Tao Li shares her experiences working in Battambang, Cambodia in her weekly blog.

Rowing in Battambang

It’s been exactly two weeks since I arrived in Battambang, and I am happy to report that things are off to a great start! I started my first day of teaching last Monday without any clear idea of what to expect. I knew – from meeting the students briefly the week before – that they had a very basic knowledge of English words.
